Whimsymaxxing for Moms Who Already Have Enough Jobs

The Short Version

Whimsymaxxing means adding little moments of delight to everyday life. Choose one tiny adventure you can enjoy too, offer two choices, and let your actual energy decide. Two minutes and a shared joke count.

Small adventures together, with the energy you actually have

Apparently we are whimsymaxxing now. This means adding little moments of delight to everyday life, which is lovely because I was concerned motherhood did not yet have enough words ending in “-ing.”

Before you picture a woodland tea party with hand-lettered invitations, relax. We are talking about five minutes of shared ridiculousness. You can participate in the same leggings that have already attended three separate events.

The version I want for us includes Mom in the fun. She gets to laugh, have an opinion and enjoy her children. She is not standing outside the magical childhood experience holding everyone's shoes.

Give an ordinary moment a tiny plot twist

Try a couch vacation. Each person chooses an imaginary destination. You announce what you would pack; the kids decide what could go wrong. “We are going to Paris.” “The suitcase contains only waffles.” Excellent. Nobody needs a passport, and the laundry remains internationally ignored.

Become food critics at your usual dinner. Everyone gives one dramatic review: “The rice has a confident personality.” Mom gets a turn. There is no new recipe, tasting requirement or obligation to like the broccoli. We are sharing opinions, not opening a restaurant.

Take a five-minute noticing walk, or look out the window together. Find something that resembles a face. Name a tree. Decide which cloud looks like it has been answering emails all day. If your child spots a dragon and you see a potato, congratulations: you have a conversation.

"She is not standing outside the magical childhood experience holding everyone's shoes."

Let the energy budget make the decision

Running on fumes? Stay seated and invent terrible names for household objects. The remote is now the Argument Rectangle. Have a little more spark? Trade one favorite song and let each person explain their choice. Feeling unusually ambitious? Build a blanket reading nook together and actually sit in it. The construction manager also deserves a chair.

Connection does not need an elaborate setup

Choose something you can enjoy too. If finger paint makes your eye twitch, select a different card. Resentfully scrubbing purple fingerprints is a questionable foundation for family delight.

Offer two possibilities: “Would you rather make up a ridiculous weather report or take a couch vacation?” Then let the answer change the plan. Kids can lead, Mom can contribute, and anyone can pass. A shared joke counts. A quiet moment counts. Stopping after two minutes because everyone is hungry also counts.

For siblings, rotate who chooses first. For a child who communicates through gestures, pictures or AAC, show the options and leave time to respond. A pointed finger or “again” can steer the whole adventure. Older kids can bring the sarcasm. It is probably already packed.

Make a memory you can repeat

At the end, ask, “What should we do again?” Keep the answer on a scrap of paper. That is your family tradition starter kit. No subscription, matching pajamas or evidence that your house was clean.

Our Family Whimsy Deck has 40 shared activities organized by time, parent energy, mess and location. Every card gives you a way to join in and a small connection prompt. Start with the “fading” cards if choosing an activity currently feels like applying for a mortgage.

Pick one for tonight. Put it beside the couch or on the table. You do not have to manufacture an unforgettable childhood before bedtime. You can just spend a few minutes being people who like each other, even when one of those people has misplaced a shoe that was on their foot approximately fourteen seconds ago.

The $5 printable deck includes instructions, 40 cards and a favorites page. Activities are invitations; adapt for your family's interests, access needs and comfort.

Worth buying for kids

Washable Tempera Paint Sticks (32 Colors)

Art time without the water cup disaster.

Why I Like It
These are solid tempera sticks that work like oversized crayons, so art time does not require brushes, water cups, or a towel laid down pre-emptively. The color goes on smooth, it dries fast, and when it ends up on the table, the counter, or my sleeve, it washes off. That last part is the entire reason this stays in the craft bin.
Best For
Arts and crafts you can set out on a Tuesday without committing to a cleanup project afterward.
What to Know
They work on paper, wood, glass, ceramic and canvas, which means the house is now an art supply. Washable still means wash it soon, not wash it never.
