I Told Them Ten Times and Somehow Nobody Heard Me

The Short Version

The short version: it's not selective hearing, it's mom overload meets kid tunnel vision. Fewer words, closer proximity, and one visual system that carries the repetition for you.

The tenth time is a data problem

By the tenth repetition, the information is no longer the issue. Delivery, timing, and competition for attention are. Nobody hears a sentence shouted up the stairs into a room with a screen in it. Including me, to be fair.

My working theory: the human brain filters out any voice that has said 'shoes' more than three times in an hour. I don't make the rules.

What actually helps

Get close, get eye contact, say it once, and have them say it back. It takes twenty seconds and beats ten rounds of stair-shouting.

The second thing: move the repetition out of my mouth. A checklist by the door repeats 'shoes, water bottle, backpack' infinitely and never loses its temper. It has a better attitude than I do by 7:40 a.m.

"It's not selective hearing. It's mom overload."

Lower the number of things worth repeating

Some of what I repeat is logistics. Some of it is me narrating my own stress out loud. The checklist handles the logistics. The stress narration I'm told is 'ambience.'

The goal isn't a silent house. It's a house where I only have to say the important things twice. Progress, not perfection.
